I messed around with mendhak's code years ago.
Just go external. Graphene is a nightmare.
Chip: u-blox M8N or F9P (if you want RTK/Centimeter accuracy).
Form Factor: USB Dongle (looks like a flash drive with an antenna connector) or a small breakout board.
Cost: ~$15 - $30 for a generic M8N dongle.
Why: They natively speak NMEA 0183 over USB serial (CDC-ACM). No modes, no menus. Plug it in, and it blasts text at 9600 baud (usually).
