Proton is not an activist project, they are a corporation. This means the only thing they are ethically prohibited from snitching on is other corporations!
They won't fall on their sword for one of us anymore than Riseup would go to prison to protect the CEO of Exxon-Mobil and for the same reason. With that out of the way, let's break down what went wrong.
Any paid account on ANY server is extraordinarily difficult to hide. This sort of thing should be free accounts only and accepting any needed free account limitations.
If you pay for an account at this level (direct action in a campaign that has included fires), the payment device becomes a nearly unsolvable problem.
Proton accepts mailed cash, but beware of fingerprints on cash, on stamps and on the envelope. Also never lick envelope seals due to DNA and make sure no hairs or skin cells get in.
Prepaid credit cards are reportedly gettting harder and harder to activate without ID, though some small denomination gift cards still can be. Problem is, the codes on the card can probably link it back to the store it was purchased at, and from there to photos taken at the register as it was checked out. If you stood in front of the register they may have a high quality face shot. If not, the overhead camera may or may not have enough.
I've never worked with crypto but I hear it's far less secure than people think.
