The cocoon is the silk and yeah, they don't want the moth to hatch so they kill it by either boiling them or gassing them. But you do need to produce more silkworms so you need some to get to the adult moth stage so they can reproduce. Although considering that this is just a woman on the internet it's possible she is just raising them to have something mildly interesting to talk about online.
