The root cause was he overestimated the speed of the progress he'd make, because he needed that much progress: he couldn't fund it otherwise and aside from that, morale would collapse quickly if he stopped picking up wins. (He'd have been done much earlier if Paris had taken a month instead of a week.) He didn't know how to fight a war in Russia and, critically, he swallowed his own bullshit about the Soviet military.

Of all the topics in history, here is just "Hitler on fedi" again. I can't think of a more boring fate.
