Me and my wife have had some similar interactions. She's empathetic to a fault, and sometimes will get into an anger/frustration/sadness spiral from political stuff. Sometimes I have to ask her to stop, or to take a break, for both our sakes. For example, we watched the last debate, but two days beforehand I told her I needed a moratorium on discussion of Trump until the debate, just to give myself a mental break. I could see a similar motivation for a politics-free night out.
