It's not a wonder to me that the left lost the "working class." That's a group that's simultaneously idealized and laughed at by folks all over the spectrum of the left. A perfect target for projections.
I grew up among poor people who folks sneered at as "yokels" and "rednecks." I've felt stung by that stuff, too.
Is it an excuse for going fash or being racist? No. But it's certainly something to think about when we are engaging in the self examination we all should be doing.
