gabe said once over 50% of purchases with crypto were fraudulent on steam. like scams and to obvious money laundering etc. (https://www.pcgamer.com/50-of-transactions-were-fraudulent-when-steam-accepted-bitcoin-for-payments-says-gabe-newell/)
i know a shop which accepts btc and has better experience with it. but smaller scale and it only sales physical products which get shipped to a physical address.
if gabe says the truth i can fully understand why they stopped taking btc and why others are hesitant. though it seems to be a technical issue rather one out of principle.
