In the 90s (which I was not there for) there was a lot of really bad C++, and then the Java Applet vs. Javascript battle played out.
Early 00s they were still thinking Applets would be a web standard. About the time I started working (08-ish, lucky me) applets were kind of an a game of pretend - nobody wanted to admit they had lost. They were doubling down on the server side.
That was probably peak jEverything.
But before Rust there was Go (which is still not a terrible language). Go and Nodejs double-teamed Java Servlets and put them in the ground...
Meanwhile PHP was just quietly successful throughout this whole entire time.
