To sell the bread you need a market. For a market you need rational human beings + property rights.
For property rights you need a good philosophy.
People with similar heritage (genetic / culture) will normally share a common philosophy. If it is a good one it would help the market. If it is a bad one it would harm the market.
Nationalism is not a factor in all this. It's just one element in a philosophy.
