Cannot talk for the UK, but eg in Austria some clever people a couple of years ago noticed a very obvious detail. Family/children benefits have not been inflation adjusted since the 1960/1970s . Half a century ago society contributed significantly to the basic costs of raising a kid. Today it's peanuts.
