We built on top of POSIX because that's what was most available, and generally pretty reliable too.
#OpenLDAP is hyper-efficient today because we analyzed every layer of it, profiled and benchmarked the hell out of it. Memory allocation, concurrency, locking overhead, network and disk I/O, etc. Optimized from the bottom up, because you can't build anything good without a solid foundation.
Could go further into the kernel, network stack etc. Been there/done that, and others are there now.
