I had a few students who were experiencing brain-lock for a number of reasons, usually stress/stereotype threat/exhaustion. I bombed out of math classes as a kid and I remember the feeling of locking up and not being able to think in some situations. Reduce stakes, try some radical changes in the environment like working entirely on paper, etc. Sometimes when your brain is stuck in the mud you just need to do something in a different gear for a while.
