It's a kinda nonsense name. "Perpetual futures" because they act like futures but without an expiration date, which makes it a bad name because without an expiration date, they're NOT futures. A better name for them would be "whenevers."

Perps aren't like futures, they're more like regular margin trading except with more leverage available. And they generally have the option to do 1x leverage so it's exactly like plain old margin on a brokerage short selling a stock.
