I have made similar explanation to people. I often reference the Dead Internet Theory a lot in my explanations to give them a reason to inquire more about how the rest of cyberspace works and why #nostr is different.
Like you I mention ad-supported algorithms that create conflict and most of the internet traffic aside from here being bots. I often end by saying "nostr is a little island on the internet where you can connect with real humans". I generally give them this link below and tell them to watch Part 1 at least. Generally they watch the whole thing as it's a really well done video.
