Yeah the original games were great, they were really unconventional for at least two reasons, (a) they were originally released only on Mac OS, which by the mid-90's was decidedly not "the gaming platform", and (b) they employed a vastly more imaginative palette in terms of monsters, environments and storylines than anything else out there.

The competitor was Quake, which while technically more advanced in its 3D, had (a) Zero plot and (b) had like 4 colors in it's palette.... browns & blacks for dungeons and bright red for gore.

I've been out of the FPS game for most of this century (hah), but from what I can see, Marathon just looks different from anything else out there, at least in terms of its aesthetic -- and that gives me hope that it really is a sort of spiritual successor
