it was absolutely not that at my university, because I was there when the change was made. the only impetus for getting rid of web space and all other kinds of self hosting was to decommission internal IT departments as a cost saving device. “we’ll save millions every year not having to run our own servers - Google can do that job for us”
hundreds of support staff lost their jobs permanently, the university made itself look like it was making fiscally wise decisions, and no one cared about the long term implications of it.
