we ran a Linux VDR for decades. The distro was called yavdr, it still hangs around but I think work on it has stopped. It came with a nice interface completely usable via remote and supported cable, terrestrial, and satellite.
Streaming was an add-on to it but it did work. Hardware was a Core 2 SFF which was plenty for HD.
It only got retired this year because the Diseqc sat switch died. AFAIK there are no other VDR distros around that are actively supported.
