No question there is some Heinlein stuff that I find icky, but IMO he was incredibly progressive with truly writing female-centred stories, transgressing gender (cf the 'mother thing' character in Have Space Suit, Will Travel), reimagining family structures (usually where the ick can be found, alas), etc.
I've read extensively of his contemporaries and he truly stands out in this regard.
