I like White Noise and want to switch, but it unfortunately is only a phone app. Realistically, a messenger needs to work everywhere. Something on the CLI, a bitlbee integration, a solid desktop implementation (especailly on Mac where there’s no good way to run an Android apk without installing Chinese spyware). Signal has all of these things. If your app is only a phone app, it is not a serious endeavor.
