wow, laser! that's super cool. we had town-wide WiFi in ~1997 via "WaveRider" hardware... i remember helping to install the POP on top of a high-rise building in the center of town, and beaming it to our first customer. i can't remember the throughput, but it was probably abysmal.
monopoly is absolutely right - northwestel fought us every step of the way. the ISP business still exists up there, amazingly.. ssicanada.com.. but the business fraction of what it was when i was a kid. i think the computer store and software division closed around 99 as well.
