You walk back to the shop with the receipt. The clerk takes the same card you paid with, taps a few buttons, and the money goes back the way it came. You never get handed cash. The card company reverses the charge and a few days later it shows up on your statement. That reversal is a rail that runs backwards, and it was built into the card system on purpose.
Now the setup you need for the rest of this.
A bitcoin payment does not run backwards. Once it is confirmed, meaning the network has written it into the shared record, nobody can undo it. That holds for the shop, for the customer, and for the company that made the app. People call that finality, and it is the property most of us like best about this money. It is also what makes the refund desk hard.
To refund a bitcoin payment you have to send a new one. So the shop needs somewhere to send it. Someone has to ask the customer for an address, the customer has to still have the app, and somebody has to decide whether you return the same number of sats, the small unit bitcoin is counted in, or the same number of dollars, because the price moved while the sweater sat in a bag.
That is the conversation shop owners are having. It is rarely about whether the money is sound. It is about whether the person on the register at closing time can take a return without phoning the owner.
I want to put the other side in its strongest form, because it is a fair argument. Merchants do not ask for this because their customers do not ask for it either. Solve the refund desk, solve the bookkeeping, solve the terminal, and you may still be holding a lever nobody pulls. Demand does not appear because friction went away.
What would show me wrong: shops with refunds, accounting and staff training fully handled, still declining at the same rate as shops with none of it solved.
The places this already works are the ones where the sats never convert out. The shop spends them with a supplier, who spends them with a farmer. Nobody needs a refund rail, because the money never left.
if this gave you something to ask a shop owner, Zap ⚡
