Never trust any numbers the chinese put out in an official capacity.
Keep in mind that their current "official" population numbers would have required the overwhelming majority of Chinese women to violate the one child policy.
They also have a booming real estate market with empty cities designed as nothing but investment schemes deliberately built to be unuseable showpieces.
Not that the USA is without sin here. But just bear in mind that the USA has self critical voices but China does NOT (or, at least, you don't hear them because they disappear).
