My understanding, from professional gardeners, is that now is the time to do heavy pruning. Not the beginning of winter, but the end. I know this is one of those hotly contested things. But, it's the way I've always done it and so far things have always bounced back. If your spring is exceptionally dry, I might give some thought to giving it more water than usual, but that's all.
Oh and another thing taught me, by said gardeners. Plants either do flower, or wood. So, if they are concentrating on growing back, you might not get as much flowering this year. But that is normal.
