Prototaxites keeps me up at night. Think of them towering 3-5m tall, enigmatic finger-like forms, they defined the landscapes of the early Devonian.
And that is why I find the prototaxites so unsettling: for despite their obvious success, their ubiquity in the fossil record, there is nothing quite like them around today. There is nothing even close.
