Ok, so it's the AM, and I said I'd give an update on what sovibt.host is doing. This is that.
In the past, sovbit.host was a kludge of services tacked together with duct tape and good intentions. This iteration is an attempt to make something that's easier for me to manage as an admin and to provide tools and features that people want to use. There are lots of great service providers out there. I am just one of many, but here is what I'm offering via sovbit.host.
Relays:
Free relay: Everyone can write to it; I use Nspam (thanks, utxo the webmaster 🧑💻 (npub1utx…50e8) ) and some other checks to help filter out bot spam. This relay has rate limits as well and purges a note after 6 months. Beyond that, it's an open relay.
Paid relay: What you would expect from a paid relay. Only paid users can write to it, and there is permanent note storage with no rate limiting.
Files and Media:
I still offer free file hosting, but it's a bit different now. You need at least a free account with me to upload. I'm sorry if that's a PITA for some people, but I was sick of moderating gore porn and Chinese model photo spam getting uploaded from god knows where. I want my service to be used by people on Nostr, not as a photobucket for bots and God knows what else. Free users get 500 MB; paid gets you 10 gigs.
I also offer video publishing tools. Videos are transcoded after upload, and you can publish as a short or YouTube-style video and even edit video metadata if you need to. (FYI, transcoding does not affect your storage limit; you only get dinged for the OG upload.)
Lightning:
I do not offer a wallet, but for users with a node CLN, LND, or lnbits wallet, you can use sovbit.host to get an LNURL.
"User portal":
Not sure what else to call this, but you can now log in and manage your profile. You can edit and backup your profile metadata, add payment targets to your profile, backup and restore follows, claim a NIP-05, add payment targets, and manage your calendar events.
I also offer TOR and I2P connections but i'm not sure there is a single client out there that works over I2P. So treat that as experimental at best.
Things on the roadmap:
a basic CDN. This is not something users will see, but after this new stack has been running for a bit, I plan on adding more regional servers, making connections and content delivery faster for users.
I plan on adding more tools as I find the need for them. If there is something in the user portal users would find useful, please feel free to reach out. What's there right now is stuff I wanted to use.
DEVS: If you have a kind that needs bypassing my spam and rate limiting, let me know. I.E., kind 38383 (Robosats order book events) are a kind that bypass all my filtering. If you're doing other stuff and need a relay to use for testing, let me know.
Sovbit.host is here to stay.
