So why the lament at its "collapse"? What reason are we given to believe that it ever existed?

I call it fascist, because that is a key component of fascist, nationalistic propaganda: the notion that once upon a time there was an age "where men were men & women were women" & all was right, even though they know full well it is a fiction.
