Totally, but another factor in favour was the military didn’t try very hard. It was very much along the lines of : I’ve been told to stop you coming through this gate but I’m deliberately not going to notice you climbing over that wall. There was no way they were going to start shooting at their own people.
In the USA I wouldn’t make that bet.
