Chrome/Chromium now seems to force-change http:// URLs to https:// URLs.
As in, you paste a http:// URL into the address bar, and Chrome silently switches it to https://, and then complains the site is down.
No, this is not a HTTP redirect or HSTS header from the site. I tested this on a site that only has HTTP available.
This is bullshit. I tend to defend some measures like that, but this is taking it too far, making it seem like something that works – is not working.

Cloudflare fixed *an* issue that allowed the researcher to more easily target individual datacenters.
*The* issue is not "fixed", as that is still possible by using a VPN and cycling through exit locations, or by using one's own nodes in these locations, etc.
Signal's statement is behind a loginwall.

👉 turn off read notifications – again, this makes it more difficult for the attacker to know when to ask the question they can only ask once per a specific period of time.

If you are still worried about this, my read of it is that these things might make the attack more difficult:
👉 turn off automatic downloading of media files
This makes this attack rely on you clicking the image to download it, making it very difficult for the attacker to know when to check for the cached status of the resource.
This is important, because for each attachment the attacker can only ask this question once per the period Cloudflare caches these resources (not sure exactly).

In other words, it's not great that this is possible, but nowhere near an immediate and present danger to anyone except a very very small group of people doing very very specific things.
If you're in that group, you'd already known you are. You'd have someone to ask about this. And you'd almost certainly be using some other tools to anonymize yourself anyway.
If that's not the case, then this is almost certainly not something to lose sleep over. Signal remains a safe choice of a secure IM. 👍

They were built to maximize engagement.
I can see how the disinformation boosting is a side-effect.
In that sense I don't think we need to assume intentional malice, and not assuming it simplifies the conversation for those of us who want to push for dealing with the underlying issue.

My personal broader take is: fedi simply is not ready for the mass influx of new people right now. And we know what the issues are: moderation (especially of racism), on-boarding, etc. These issues are solvable, and they need to be solved.
And that's fine, as long as we do learn and improve so that we are ready for the next waves.
This is a marathon, not a sprint.

while I am very critical of Bluesky (the blobgpost right before the one you link to deals with that), I don't "losing people to Bluesky" is that much of a problem. At least not in the same sense as having a single gigantic instance in the middle of fedi is a problem.
That's a longer conversation, but tl;dr is I don't see Bluesky as a potentially existential threat to fedi. But I could see mastodon.social becoming such an existential threat, the way identi.ca turned out to be for StatusNet.

exactly.
In other words, if someone is following you, but is not mentioned in your reply, they won't get that reply in their home timeline.
There is one exception, I believe, which is when they are following both you and the author of the toot you are responding. Then it will pop in their timeline, apparently.

thank you for this thread. Having had a few high-popularity toots myself, this matches my experience well.
When my follower count reached a certain level I've noticed that when I respond in a thread, especially a thread that happens to be controversial and polarizing, that might bring a bunch other people to also reply – potentially leading to a pile-on of sorts.
So I switched my default post visibility to "Quiet public". That helped a lot, and felt like the responsible thing to do.

no, it's not the same name. Just as "Kiev" is not the same name as "Kyiv".
If a person tells you they prefer to be referred to in a particular way, instead of the way you referred to them before, you apologize and comply.
Same with a polity that tells you that they prefer to use their own spelling of their capital city, rather than that of their invader and colonizer.

seriously though, I don't care if it's "maniacal" or whatever else. Kremlin's goal in this war was to make Ukraine into a Russian client state again, one way or another. It's visible in their actions, their words, the narratives they push out into the world.
Again, you may disagree, but by your responses in this thread, you never really engaged with this topic honestly.

so, Russia sent troops there in violation of the Budapest Memorandum, where it promised to guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty.
It then stirred up a conflict in Donbas, and then became a "neutral" guarantor of the Minks Agreements.
And then sent more troops into Donbas.
And then began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, almost encircling Kyiv, and broadcasted rhetoric claiming Ukraine is not a real country, Ukrainians are not a real nation, and so on.
Dunno, difficult to say!

either we agree on basic facts, or we don't.
One of the basic facts is that in 2014 in Donbas and Crimea there were Russian military, and that Russian military actively supported, including by artillery fire from the territory of Russian Federation, amply documented by Bellingcat:

Kremlin was also a signatory of Budapest Memorandum, where it guaranteed Ukraine's territorial sovereignty in return for Ukraine giving away post-Soviet nuclear weapons:

first of all, I don't think the hundreds of thousands killed and wounded over the last 1000 days of war in Ukraine are a "drop of blood".
Secondly, I think we are smart enough to be able to walk and chew gum. Imperialism and colonialism are bad regardless who perpetrates them. I protested against Iraq invasion, I loathe US colonialism.
But that doesn't make what Kremlin is doing in Ukraine a "dick move" – it is still state terrorism, attempted genocide, and a war of aggression.

1. Kremlin loves misdirection. So far there had not been any negotiations in good faith from Kremlin. And I am including the Minsk accords, which were negotiated and signed, and then ignored and broken by the Kremlin.
2. Look, we can split hairs all you want here. The aim of Kremlin is for Ukraine not to exist, and it's been shown time and again.

1. The last elections in Georgia.
