the main problem, most ISPs don't want you to bring-your-own router, and very few have the ability to set a DNS server other than the ones they provide, for DHCP clients.

If this doesn't make sense, that's ok. So the device essentially has to MitM your entire network. That's Man in The Middle.
ISP router -> wifi off, everything except firewall/adblock box d/con -> firewall box -> switch -> lan clients, WAP, etc

This is the *only* foolproof way to do this, imo
