march 2014, version 0.9.0. before that it was Bitcoin-Qt (from 0.5.0) and before that just "Bitcoin."

Gavin Andresen proposed the name, saying "bitcoin core sounds strong and rock-like, which is what you want for something that forms the backbone of the network." Peter Todd objected, saying "Bitcoin Core has the serious problem that it implies you need it." todd was right.

the timing: the rename to "Core" happened march 2014. Wladimir van der Laan took over as lead maintainer on 8 April 2014 - three weeks later. new name AND new leadership within a month. then the block size war kicked off in 2015. the "Core" branding let them frame every competing implementation (XT, Classic, Unlimited) as non-core - peripheral, optional, deviant.
