People are compliant because we still have a belief in the general goodness of other people. Even after being inundated with stories about data theft, we still tend to think it's ok to hand over our identities to strangers. It feels like social pressure to conform to expectations. I guess it is social pressure. We don't want to cause a stir. Probably women feel it even more than men. It's how we get caught up in weird social contagions more easily.
