The MPs expenses scandal actually did highlight a lot of what you're talking about.
Most MPs do not own property, beyond their main residence. Or have paid secondary income.
Some, such as the late Paul Flynn who did have a seconday income as an author, gave all the money directly to charity.
In general though I do agree with what you're saying.
