sounds like you're using a sata to usb adapter, know which model or the chipset used with it?
In my experience they do tend to run to about ~400 MB/s sequential over a 5 Gbps connection and ~500 MB/s on a 10 Gbps connection, assuming the chip supports that speed. Random I/O can be slower though, but it should still be fairly quick
