Shower thought (well, sleepy-just-before-bed-thought): when talking about galaxies we always keep thinking of the area beyond the galaxy's edge as completely empty. But isn't it far more likely that there are stars there that just happen to be much less concentrated and therefore harder to spot than those in any given galaxy?
Not thar I expect we could check that.
