The Church is, and has always been, Biblical Israel. European kingdoms typically regarded themselves as separate states, yet spiritually-united in Christendom - another name for True Israel. So the idea of Europeans destroying Israel would in their minds have meant literal suicide.

Judea was an ancient kingdom whose name derived from Judah - one of the twelve Tribes of Israel; but it hadn’t been a Traditional ethnic kingdom since the Babylonian Captivity.
