Hah, I am awesome, but in this case it's just that I happened to be in the right place at the right time.

My guess is that if a three-year old thread resurfaces and a whole lot of people end up pressing like and retoot, that can degrade one's experience of using mastodon. Taking action against that by hiding a thread is fair enough.

Or it might just be the weirdness that fedi has for multi-year-old toots. I dunno.
