Unfortunately, wind and PV solar do not provide the same kind of energy services that thermal power stations do. To "fake it" is incredibly expensive and difficult (the largest proportion of grid storage in any major country is in Britain, and is equivalent to about half an hour of average consumption). So the real alternatives are fission and coal.

The harm done by coal is very real. The dangers of fission are mostly hypothetical.
