Is your WIP's first chapter indicative of the whole work?
Chapter 1 introduces the MC as she is at that moment, her personality, etc. It jumps the reader into her main issue. She'll change over time, as will the situation. It gives enough background on her, some main characters, their lives, their relationships, & concerns so the reader gets a sense of how things are before everything falls to shit. Some hints are given as to what might cause a problem later.
