Nolan neither shows us Homer's Odysseus, nor does he recontextualize him as a modern hero. Honestly, I'd have to say that Odysseus as portrayed by Matt Damon is thoroughly *decontextualized*.
The film doesn't actually provide the kind of perspective necessary to form a new, modern take on this "complicated man". There is no grounding in time or place. The film wants to have a moral theme, but provides no moral context for the way the story plays out.
