>We know that girls cannot be educated beyond 12 years of age, women cannot attend university and working is difficult because women have to have a male chaperone to appear out in public. They must be completely covered in loose clothing. They cannot attend gyms to exercise. They cannot speak in public and cannot read aloud even in their own homes. They can be stoned to death if a male relative accuses them of a transgression against him. Girls can be “married”, effectively traded to other men for sex, at eleven or twelve. They can be routinely beaten, raped and no man really cares if they are killed. They cannot be seen through windows and one Taliban representative has suggested that a woman only really needs one eye, though this is not, as yet, official law.
>If women are being rescued on mountain villages, and few are, then it is only by a male relative, but most of those men are running down the hills to be rescued by other men, scrambling for rescue helicopters. We have seen them. Cowardly, self-serving and misogynist from the top of their heads to the tip of their fleeing heels.
>I do not think these village men are victims of the Taliban regime, I think they are beneficiaries. They have complete control of women domestically and sexually. They may not have much, but they have the right to unrestrained sex with the woman in their home as often as they like, and she must fulfil his every other physical need too. She cannot leave the house if he says no, he can kill her if she objects. If these men wanted they could rise against the Taliban, form or join a resistance network, but they do not. They are not all cowards, most are colluders. Men are benefiting from the degradation of women in Afghanistan. This is the patriarchal dream. Delivered by Akhundzada straight to their door and they have grabbed it with both hands.
