it seems to me that "cowboy" would typically be a low-wage job with a boss, not really anything romantic.
Constantly herding cattle seems like an odd way to farm cattle, but I read a little and apparently it was/is something done in semi-arid grasslands with semi-feral cattle, originating with "vaqueros."
