y'know, just thought about it for a moment
on Plasma Wayland and wlroots compositors, you have the display server, hotkey daemon, window manager, and compositor all rolled into one, but on Gnome you have all of that + the desktop shell and notification daemon (which was already part of the desktop shell in gnome, which itself also has a JavaScript engine for 'extensions' which actually have no real API and can break at any moment because gnome doesn't really want you to use extensions)
Like, call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure having this big of a monolith isn't all that great for stability
