I've thought of an experiment to test my theory that Lasius emarginatus uses sidewalk and wall cracks to navigate and this is why they are successful. I will stop and create a break in their pheromone trail along a crack and see if it trips them up. With other lasius ants if you clean a spot along their trail they will be confused for a bit until they can reconnect it.
I will compare this to what happens when doing the same thing with Lasius neoniger and see who can recover faster.
