I ran the experiments now for the "double tube" case. I measured all these inductance values at the three windings around core "A".

Core with 3 turns (blue): 5uH

Add a second core ("B") next to it, thread a red wire through them but leave it open: 5uH

Join the red wire ends: 2.7uH

Short the three wires around core "B": 1uH

I don't have any spare binocular cores unfortunately. I've already soldered the ones from the kit in place!
