I was a journalism minor in college back in the 1990s back when journalism was a thing. Reporting was supposed to be entirely about facts, presented dispassionately, presented with the most significant/relevant facts first, then getting into finer details as you extend the story.
“Taking a different approach” definitely feels like it has a normalizing spin to it. “Unprecedented” feels more neutral and accurate (to me).
