Interesting data point: I work for a government contractor and we've had our share of the political nonsense spilling into communication and behavioral standards for the last 10 years, but one thing we haven't had, in my company, is a thing about the word "master" in the context of IT.

Inherit or create a new repo, for work, and the primary branch is called "main" or "master" or whatever -- no one cares, no one complains, no one asks anyone to change it. Just needs to be an obvious name.
