I'd have to disagree with "notorious" machine world view. I think engineers understand the limitations of their own models but mechanistic models can produce perfectly acceptable results and there's nothing philosophically wrong with using them. While we should always be cognizant of what is or may be missing I also think your view of engineer's may be a bit outdated.
