I was near home in east San Jose where an unusually strong thunderstorm got my attention: lots of lightning, clouds moving in opposite directions near each other = rotation, first time I saw backlit-green clouds. Then I drove away fleeing hail. Having noticed that, I flunked as a stormspotter telling a friend on Ham Radio, "If we were in the midwest, I'd think we were about to have a tornado." 30+ minutes before the tornado. 10 years later I got to redeem myself.
