How *should* you start an essay? By jumping right in. Cite an intriguing piece of evidence, or make a claim, or respond to an existing part of the conversation. You don’t actually need a gentle introduction. The reader doesn’t care.
This is a skill I’ve been honing ever since. I want my essays to start with something provocative, something that doesn’t go without saying.
