when I was in my early twenties, a woman named Laurel, my mom's friend and an elementary school therapist, took notice of me; I'd just bounced out of my first serious adult relationship and moved back in with my parents and was feeling rather useless. She made it her business to point out things I was good at to my face, and eventually helped me get tutoring work and starting my own business. Later on, we became writing buddies at a local cafe. A hand up when I needed it desperately.
